Industrylands themes

This site contains a series of themes supporting the query and display of industrial lands.  Each theme is described below.

Industrial Zones
This theme displays areas zoned for industrial type purposes under the Local Environmental Plan (LEP). The LEP is the principal legal document for controlling development of land at the Council level.  The zoning provisions of the LEP establish permissible uses for each Local Government Area within the State of New South Wales (NSW) and standards regulate the extent of development.

Data Status:
These data are current as at June 2001 with the exception of data within Warringah Shire Council LEP which are current as at March 2002.

Data Source:
Digitised from LEP maps held at the Sydney offices of the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources except for those digital data supplied by Ashfield, Bankstown, Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Campbelltown, Canterbury, Fairfield, Gosford, Greater Cessnock, Hunters Hill, Hurstville, Kiama, Kogarah, Lake Macquarie, Lane Cove, Liverpool, Maitland, Marrickville, Rockdale, Sutherland, Wollondilly and Woollahra Councils for their respective Local Government Areas.  For further information on zoning and development provisions including zoning boundary updates, contact the individual council web sites listed at the Department of Local Government

Mine Subsidence Districts
This theme shows the boundaries of proclaimed Mines Subsidence Districts under the Mines Subsidence Compensation Act.  It is mandatory to obtain the Mines Subsidence Board's approval to subdivide, erect or alter any improvements on land that is within a proclaimed Mines Subsidence District.

Coastal Wetlands (SEPP 14)
This theme shows coastal wetlands of state significance and covered by State Environmental Planning Policy No. 14 (SEPP 14).  SEPP 14 places planning and development controls under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 over these wetlands. Data Status:
These data are current as at April 2002 (Government Gazette 37 Folio 2035). The boundaries were initially identified from stereo interpretation of 1:25 000 aerial photographs dated 1984 and 1986 and are subject to regular amendments.

Acid Sulphate Soils
This layer shows the occurrence of acid sulphate soils. These soils are generally submerged but when exposed or drained, they become oxidised and sulphuric acid is produced. This reduces the soil fertility and kills vegetation.

There are 5 classes of acid sulphate soil, these define the depths of occurance and the possible need for approval of works before excavating, based on the Local Environmental Plan (LEP) planning instrument.

ACID SULFATE SOIL CLASSES
Class 1: Any work
Class 2: Work below the ground surface and works by which the water table is likely to be lowered.
Class 3: Work beyond 1 metre below the natural ground surface and works by which the water table is likely to be lowered beyond 1 metre below the natural surface.
Class 4: Work beyond 2 metre below the natural ground surface and works by which the water table is likely to be lowered beyond 2 metre below the natural surface.
Class 5: Within 500 metres of the adjacent class 1, 2, 3, and 4; land which are likely to lower the water table below 1 metre AHD in class 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Data Status:
The data was mapped at a scale of 1:25,000 and supplied in December 1997.  Display of this dataset at a larger scale may give inaccurate information.  The data was collected over a number of years by the New South Wales Department of Land and Water Conservation (DLWC).

Data Status:
All remnant vegetation greater than 0.5 hectare in size has been identified.  Stereo aerial photographs at 1:16,000 scale from November 1997 to March 1998 were used to delineate boundaries, which were mapped at a scale of 1:25,000. Viewing of this dataset at a larger scale may give incorrect information.

Elevation Model
This theme displays The elevation and aspect of the terrain.  The image shows the elevation (distance in metres above sea-level) as a series of colours from green through blue, purple and red to yellow.   The elevation these colours represent are indicated in the legend.

The images are shaded according to the aspect of the surface.  This is the angle of the surface to true north.  The shading assumes light is coming from the North West (top-right) such that surfaces facing to the North-West will be light while a surface facing the South-East will be dark.  This shading helps visualise the terrain as it simulates a surface lit by a low North-Western sun.

These data were collected over an extented period of time and may not represent the current situation.  They were mapped at a scale of 1:25,000 and form part of the Digital Topographic Data Base (DTDB).

Data Source:
Land and Property Information NSW (LPINSW). For more information contact: www.lpi.nsw.gov.au

The data source consisted of vector contour lines from the DTDB which were interpolated (using an algorithm known as "Minimum Curvature") to generate a gridded surface at 10m centres. The data sets created (4,096 maps) were shaded using the algorithm described above (Elevation affects Hue while Aspect affects Lightness) and stored as 4,096 images.  The images were then used to create a series of image tiles at different scales.
